Immunizations Needed Before Fall Enrollment

of special interest for incoming Kindergarteners, Fifth Graders, and Students 14 & 15 years old

As parents and students make preparations for enrollment, remember to include needed medical checkups and catch-up immunizations. Based on Kansas Statute K.A.R. 28-1-20, all children must be current on immunizations when attending any Kansas school.

  • For NEW kindergarteners, this usually means one more round of vaccinations, which will include a fifth Dtap, a fourth IPV, a second MMR and a second varicella (chicken pox).
  • All children entering FIRST through FIFTH grade will be required to have documentation of having received THREE doses of Hepatitis B vaccine.
NOTE: Though it has been previously recommended, this is a new requirement for children entering FIFTH grade and some students in that age group may need additional doses of vaccine. Check your child’s records.
  • All children entering FIRST through FIFTH grade are also required to have received a minimum of ONE dose of varicella (two doses are recommended), or have parent or doctor signed verification of having had varicella illness.
  • For students who are 14 or 15 years old, parents should check immunization records for a recent tetanus booster. All students are required to have a second tetanus shot at some time within 10 years of the school entry dose. Those receiving booster tetanus vaccinations at this time are encouraged to get the Tdap vaccination which also protects against pertussis.

Note that some children may have received these vaccinations but do not have the proper documentation on file at school.

Plan now to have those shots done or records updated BEFORE school starts in August to avoid possible exclusion from school.

Questions about immunizations can be directed to your school nurse or by phoning the Health Department at 785-863-2447.
