August Updates
BEGINNING DAY OF SCHOOL
The first day of school will be for grades 1-9 on Thursday, August 21, dismissing at 11:30.
The second day of school will be a full day for grades 1-12 on Friday, August 22.
NOTICE TO KINDERGARTEN PARENTS
The first day of school for kindergarten students will be Thursday, August 21, dismissing at 11:30. Kindergarten students will continue the half-day schedule through August 29 dismissing at 12:30. Beginning September 2 the schedule will be full days.
ENROLLMENT AT JCN
Enrollment at Jefferson County North will take place Monday, Aug. 4, 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, August 5, 8 a.m. – Noon, at student’s respective building. We would like to request that students new to the district that will be attending the high school to please call to set up a time to enroll other than the enrollment times listed above. Please call the high school at 913-774-8515 or toll free 877-215-4447. Social Security numbers for all new students will be needed at enrollment for permanent record identification. Students and/or parents may enroll on either of the two days. If for some reason you are unable to attend one of the enrollment sessions, please contact the school secretary so other arrangements can be made.
JCN Extended Learning Program
Enrollment for the JCN Extended Learning Program will be at the same time as enrollment for JCN students for SY08-09. The JCN Extended Learning Program is for any JCN K-5 student. The program focuses on strengthening academic skills; planned group time with an emphasis on building healthy relationships and opportunities for widening students horizons. This program has been in place at JCN since the fall of 1999 and has been a successful program and learning experience for the students. Arlene Mauzey is the director of the program and does an excellent job of working with the students.
Program fees for 2008-09 are $5.50 a day.
APPROVED FEES FOR 2008-09
Student enrollment fees per K.S.A. 72-5390 that are to be paid at the time of enrollment are: Pre-School $50 a month; Kindergarten $45; Grades 1-12 $60; Band Instrument Rental Fees are: Grades 6-12 $50.
Meal tickets will be available along with applications for free and reduced lunches. Lunch cost will be: Grades K-5, $1.70; Grades 6-8, $1.85; Grades 9-12, $1.95; Adults, $2.65; Reduced, $.40. Breakfast cost will be: Grades K-5, $.85; Grades 6-12, $1.10; reduced students $.30; adults, $1.60. Extra milk price is $.30
Season Tickets
Student Athletic tickets will be $15.00, high school/middle school adult ticket will be $40.00; middle school only adult ticket will be $20.00; and high school only adult ticket will be $30.00. Tickets can be purchased during enrollment.
REMINDER
Please remember that your child, grades Pre-K-Kindergarten and 6th through 12th, need to have a completed physical at the beginning of the school year. Thank-you!
Senior Citizen Complimentary Passes
In recognition of past and present efforts, all residents of USD 339 who are 62 or older shall be granted a free lifetime pass to all school-sponsored athletic activities held in the district (excluding league and state sponsored events). Qualified senior citizens may obtain a pass by applying at any of the school offices and presenting proof of age and residence.
Now Hear This
In each monthly newsletter, there will be a section, “Now Hear This.” This section will let people voice their opinion about the operation of the USD 339 school system. People do not need to sign their names, but if there is a signature, the Superintendent will contact them and try to answer the questions or concerns.
Future Newsletter Are Available
The JCN Update will be mailed by the first week of each month from August until June. The Update is sent to all residents with a Nortonville or Winchester address and all other parents of JCN students. Board of Education Meetings
USD 339 Board of Education meetings are held on the second Monday of each month in the district office in Winchester at 7:30 p.m. The agenda for the next board meeting, along with the minutes of the previous regular meeting, will be included in each month’s newsletter. All patrons are invited to attend these meetings.
Substituting for JCN
Anyone interested in substituting in our district should contact the superintendent’s office at 913-774-2000 or toll free at 877-452-3000. All substitutes should have a proper Kansas Teaching Certificate. Substitutes will be paid $85.00 a day and when the assignment is in both Nortonville and Winchester the pay will be $90.00
Asbestos-Annual Notification to employees, students and parents
Unified School District 339 has asbestos containing material present in our buildings. These areas are being managed and maintained according to ‘AHERA’ regulations. In addition, all asbestos containing material is being monitored every six months according to law. The asbestos presents no immediate danger to students and staff and will be maintained for an indefinite period of time. The district is in compliance with the ‘EPA’ and ‘AHERA’ rules and regulations and has the safety and well being of its students and staff uppermost in mind. All asbestos information is open to the public and a master plan is available in the District Office at Winchester.
